About the product
Lantern Hunt is a free iPhone app that turns removing spotted lanternflies into a community effort. Learn to spot adults, nymphs and egg masses with photo guides, remove them, and take a before and an after photo. A person reviews each submission, and approved removals appear on a community map. You can earn points, build streaks, climb a leaderboard, customize your own lanternfly and hatch nymph companions. Each egg mass holds 30 to 50 eggs, and they sit on trees from fall until May, so winter is a great time to help. Lantern Hunt launched on September 29, 2026, started with spotted lanternflies, and was built by a group of Yale students. It is an independent student project, not an official Yale program.
